LAUNCH OF THE COST OF MILK PRODUCTION STUDY REPORT 2024

The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Agriculture & Livestock Development Dr. Andrew Karanja accompanied by the Principal Secretary State Department for Livestock Development. Jonathan Mueke officially launched the Cost of Milk Production Report 2024. The study was commissioned by Kenya Dairy Board to estimate the cost of milk production in Kenya, to inform policy and regulatory decisions, including interventions to ensure fair prices for both producers and consumers.
This study aimed to document farm-level production costs, identify cost drivers, and propose interventions to enhance competitiveness.
Recommended Interventions from the study are:

  1. Reduce the cost of feed.
  2. Enhance monitoring and enforcement of the quality of feeds and raw materials in the market.
  3. Promote the adoption of cattle breeds that are more adaptable to local conditions and have better feed conversion efficiency.
  4. Information and training of farmers on dairy herd management.
  5. Enhance transparency in milk pricing and timeliness of payment to farmers by cooperatives and processors.

    This interventions can be implemented through collaborative efforts by all Dairy Stakeholders across the Dairy Value Chain.
